Digital Technology

“Digital technology turns media consumers into producers”. In your experience, how has your creativity developed through using digital technology to complete your coursework productions? [25]

Throughout my two productions, digital technology was a necessity. Digital technology enabled me to adapt and push my creative ideas further in ways that I wouldn't have been able to do with out it. I used digital technology through out all processed, From filming to editing to presenting. My two productions consisted of an opening of a thriller film and a music video. I feel my creativity progressed through out these projects as I felt much more at ease with the equipment I used by my second production, I also felt I was able to investigate more and use my equipment to its best ability.

For my thriller opening I used blogger to present my portfolio. I presented all areas through research, planning and production. I presented through text and embedding both photos and videos. This is one aspect of production that I can easily see a massive progression in. For my music video, my second production, I also used blogger to present my portfolio. However this time round I used several other technologies to present work, such as Slideshare to present story boards, You tube to create evaluations and Scribd to present documents I had worked on. These programs made it much more easier to present work but also made my blog much more interesting to view. If you compare the two blogs, they seem to have been made by two completely different people.

For both productions I used iMovie to edit. For my thriller opening I also used garage band. For this production I felt I created a good piece of work, however I dont think I was creative as I could have been. I used colourisation for flashbacks, this use of black and white made the shots recognisable as flashbacks to the audience. I also used a slow motion effect to add a sense of time slowing down, and an earyness that is common in thriller films. I was creative with sound in this production, I used several voice overs, which I created using Garage band. These voice overs added narrative to the opening, they played over a piece of music that opened the film.

The editing for my music video was much more advanced. I felt I was much more curious with the editing software and this led to me creating a much more creative piece of work. The project needed precise editing such as lip syncing, I done this in iMovie, cutting the clips to specific timing so that the lips would match the music. I also used many more types of shots and effects such as jump cutting. This allowed me to create quicker transitions but by using the whole content. I also used both slow motion and reverse effects, this created a slow flowing video that matched the genre of music. For my music video I also used the green screen effect. Originally looking for split screens  and unable to find this effect, I fell upon the green screen effect, this allowed me to layer two shots, not only emphasising an action but adding to a consistent layered theme that ran throughout both my promotional material and video.

For my second production I also had two make two ancillary tasks, to complete my portfolio. I created a digipak and advertisement to go with the music video. To create these I used Serif Page plus, a editing software. This allowed me to be very creative and create links between all three pieces of work. I was able to choose typography, which for me fitted with the ocean theme of my project by reminding me of the little mermaid. I was able to crop photos, some were still shots from the video, to make them fit the theme of the ocean, for example I created a wave edging. I used colourisation, an effect I used in my first production. I colourised my photos and layers, red and blue to portray house colours.
